What is a VIN?

The Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code defined by ISO 3779. The first 3 characters (WMI) identify the manufacturer and country, characters 4-9 (VDS) describe the vehicle, the 10th encodes the model year and the last ones are the production serial number.

On North American vehicles the 9th character is a check digit. In Europe it is optional, so the model year may be shown as “probable”. Detailed data (engine, trim) is most complete for US-market vehicles.
